Nanaimo – It was short and not very strong, but the ground shook all over the area on Friday.

USGS seismologists, who track earthquakes around the world, detected a 2.4-magnitude quake east of Nanaimo at about 4:50 p.m. Friday, July 8.

Some scattered reports of a loud bang or a long-range explosion were reported as far away as the Sunshine Coast around the same time, but it is unclear whether the two incidents were related.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are not expected to result in any tsunami alerts or warnings, nor are they considered strong enough to cause any damage to buildings or infrastructure.
