Josephine Melville: EastEnders actor dies backstage at Nottingham Playhouse after performance
Joséphine Melville, the actress best known for her work on EastEndersdied backstage at a theater after a performance.
The actor had starred as Maggie in a production of Natasha Gordons’ play nine night at Nottingham Playhouse.
Melville died after the Thursday, October 20 performance, the theater announced Friday, October 21.
In a statement, the venue said Melville received immediate assistance from house rescuers and a medically qualified member of the public before paramedics arrived.
However, she died at the scene. No cause of death was given.
Nottingham Playhouse Announced: We are deeply saddened to announce that last night actress Josephine Melville died backstage at Nottingham Playhouse following the performance of the play nine nightin which she was playing.
The Josephine family has been informed, and our thoughts and sincere condolences are with them.
The rest of the series of nine nighta co-production between Nottingham Playhouse and Leeds Playhouse, has been cancelled.
Born in Essex, Melville has appeared in a number of theater productions throughout her career.
In 1986, she played Kelvin Carpenters’ girlfriend, Tessa Parker, in EastEnders in 1986. Earlier that year, Melville made an appearance in the music video for Ella Henderson’s single Brave.
On social media, she describes herself as an actress, writer, director, producer and archivist. Melville also founded the South Essex African Caribbean Association (Seaca).
The news of his death caused outpourings of grief, actress Julie Hesmondhalgh tweeting: So much love and deepest condolences.

Speaking of Melville, Nottingham Playhouses chief executive Stephanie Sirr said: We send our love and condolences to Jos’ family and friends.
