Coronavirus: Both “short-term and long-term battles” are being fought, says the dentist

As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, NI dentists are in “short-term and long-term battles,” the dental technician said.
An oral health group created for children and the elderly in early 2020 will be resurrected as soon as possible, Michael Donaldson told Stormont’s Health Commission.

He said supply could not be provided without “possibly affecting trust capacity and broader health services.”
However, dental clinics typically source their PPE and work with smaller providers than BSO to protect it.
He said the financial support provided should mean adequate financing to enable the purchase of Level 2 PPE.
Dentists usually pay for their PPE, but the Minister of Health has announced that 3 million PPE will be provided free of charge.
Donaldson said the amount of PPE distributed to dentists was “huge” and required to transport 30 linked lorries and over 700 pallets.
The Business Services Organization is working with shipping companies to deliver from next week, which was “very difficult”.

When asked about the one-hour fallow period between patients after the AGP, Michael Donaldson said, “Under the work of the expert panel, it is not a normal procedure for individuals to dig.
South Belfast’s Alliance MLA, Paula Bradshaw, asked where there was evidence of fallow-time requirements between AGPs.
Donaldson said the advice came from the British Public Health Agency (PHE) and did not consider evidence that PHE reached that position.
He said the NI changed its approach to what dentists could do, so it was tailored to the local situation.
“No one in the UK is currently challenging AGP advice from PHE, but the report is under consideration.”
Colum Guildernew, chairman of the committee, said it was “very worried.”
