Gladiator 2 Cast Adds Returning Star & Stranger Things Actor
According Deadline, wonder woman Star Connie Nielsen has signed on to star alongside Oscar nominee Paul Mescal in upcoming Ridley Scotts Gladiator 2. Nielsen will reprise her role as Lucilla from the 2000 film, where she was introduced as Maximus’ former lover and the Emperor’s sister. Besides, stranger things Breakout Joseph Quinn has also been tapped to join the star-studded cast, in which Hell will play Emperor Caracalla.
Gladiator 2 will once again be directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay written by David Scarpa. The sequel is set to take place years after the events of the first film. Mescal plays Lucius, the now adult son of Nielsens Lucilla in the first film. It will also star Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Oscar winner Denzel Washington. Further details about their characters are still being kept under wraps.
Gladiator 2 will be produced by Michael Pruss, President of Scott and Scott Free, alongside Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon Entertainments. Universal also has the right to partner with the project once it’s wrapped, as they co-produced the original with DreamWorks. Other crew members returning from the original film are costume designer JantyYates and production designer Arthur Max.
The original film was directed by Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, Djimon Hounsou, Tommy Flanagan, and more. The film centered on a disgraced Roman general who becomes a gladiator after being betrayed by Commodus, the Emperor’s greedy son. The role of Maximus is often considered a defining role in the career of Crowe, who gained worldwide recognition for his compelling performance.
