Increased seismic activity around the region serves as a reminder to prepare for earthquakes

Reno, NV (Colo) – Since the beginning of June, northern Nevada has seen waves of small earthquakes in the Bevin Mountain area and, more recently, in the Spanish Springs area. Shortly in the afternoon of June 26, a magnitude 1.08 earthquake was recorded near the Sun Valley region, the same region that a magnitude 1.3 earthquake had struck just a few hours earlier…the same region that had been struck by a magnitude 3 earthquake, the day before, in Sunday.

Local seismologists at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, say the recent increase in seismic activity in our region serves as an important reminder that Nevada is earthquake country.

“The earthquake risk here in the greater Reno area is very high, and that doesn’t mean it happened in the last decade or two, to any great degree — we had a Mogul sequence about 15 years ago, and that was a magnitude 5.0, sort of like that,” said Dr. Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Laboratory. “What we don’t know is if this small sequence that started on Peavine Mountain or in Spanish Springs will eventually lead to a larger earthquake–probably not–but some of the biggest earthquakes in Nevada started with small sequences just like us,” Kent said. .
