Trump reacts to Biden withdrawal, calling him 'worst president'

Former President Donald Trump responded to President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 race by telling NBC News that Biden is by far the worst president in U.S. history.

“No president has ever done more damage to our country, from energy independence to bringing in millions and millions of illegal immigrants,” Trump told NBC News in an interview.

Asked if he was surprised by Biden's announcement, Trump said Biden should never have been there in the first place.

He should have stayed in his basement, Trump continued.

A senior Trump adviser told NBC News before Biden's announcement that while the campaign had argued it didn't care who led the Democratic ticket, the adviser said the campaign preferred Biden stay in the race because it had planned for this showdown.

The Trump campaign also has internal polls that indicate Harris is outperforming Biden in some areas, but he is outperforming her in others, according to the senior adviser.

The former president used a rally Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to insult Biden and criticize Democrats who have urged Biden to abandon his re-election bid.

“This guy went and got votes, and now they want to take them away from him,” Trump said at the rally. “That’s democracy. They talk about democracy. Let’s take it away from him.”

The former president continued to criticize Biden in several posts on Truth Social in the hours after Biden's decision was announced.
