Aspirin 'may prevent cancer in diabetics'
Regular use of aspirin may reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer in diabetics by 40%, a study found.
It also has the potential to prevent one in five cancers in the general population, according to cancer charity Planets.
Researchers from Southampton looked at the medical records of around 10,000 people in the UK.
One of the authors, Dr Zaid Hammadi, said this was the first study to include such a large population in the UK and the first to report an effect on people with diabetes.
He said: “Pancreatic cancer is rated as one of the deadliest cancers and almost everyone who gets it will die within five years of diagnosis.

“We found a 20% reduction in risk in the general population, which has been demonstrated in the past for other cancers, particularly colon cancer, but is now reproducible for pancreatic cancer.
“But what is more surprising is that the protection is even stronger in people with diabetes, with a 40% lower risk in this patient group.”
Researchers from the University of Southampton and Southampton University Hospital studied a sample of records from the UK Biobank, a cohort of 500,000 people recruited between 2006 and 2010.
The researchers said that at the time of their analysis, there were 1,762 cases of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most common type of pancreatic cancer, in the group.
People who were taking aspirin regularly at the time of recruitment were less likely to develop PDAC.
The NHS said low-dose aspirin, usually 75mg or a quarter of a regular tablet, is generally safe to take for long periods of time.
However, it is recommended that you only take it if your doctor or midwife recommends it.
The NHS website says increasing the dose may increase the risk of stomach ulcers.
