Rabie raccoon killed by dog in backyard of New Jersey home – NBC10 Philadelphia
Another raccoon is Rabies case found in Camden CountyAccording to the county Department of Health and Human Services.
A resident of Lindenwald, New Jersey, reported on Oct. 9 that his dog had killed a raccoon in his backyard, officials said.
Animal control personnel picked up the raccoon and sent it for rabies testing at the New Jersey Public Health and Environmental Laboratory, officials said. Results came back this week that the animal had rabies.
Health officials said animal control officers and the dog's family were alerted.
The family was able to provide evidence that the dog was up to date on its rabies vaccine and booster shots, officials said. The dog will be kept in confinement and under observation for 45 days.
No human exposure occurred, officials said.
This incident is the latest in recent reports involving raccoons. Skunk tests positive for rabies in New Jersey.
How can I prevent rabies and stay safe?
“Rabies is a serious disease, but it is preventable with early treatment,” said Camden County Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the Camden County Health Department. “If you are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.”
The county urged pet owners to follow “a few simple rules” to prevent the spread of rabies.
- Keep all dogs, cats, and ferrets up to date on vaccinations.
- Please keep your pet under direct supervision to avoid contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary attention immediately.
- To remove stray animals from your neighborhood, contact your local animal control agency. They may not be vaccinated and can transmit diseases.
Mr Betteridge also urged people to keep themselves and their pets away from strange animals.
- Enjoy wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, and foxes from afar. Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals in open garbage cans or litter boxes.
- Do not adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not attempt to nurse a sick animal back to health. Call animal control or an animal shelter for help.
- Teach your children that they should never handle unfamiliar animals, whether wild or domestic, even if they seem friendly.
- Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, or similar locations where bats may come into contact with people or pets.
- When traveling abroad, avoid direct contact with wild animals and be especially careful around dogs in developing countries. Rabies is common in developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Tens of thousands of people die from rabies each year in these countries.
