Whooping cough returns to pre-pandemic trends
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) – Pertussis case numbers are returning to pre-pandemic trends, according to statistics. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Number of pertussis patients according to Facebook post Participation from the Rock Island County Health Department is increasing across the country.
Scott County has reported 21 cases since July. In November alone, 14 cases were reported.
Rashon Moore, clinical services manager for the county health department, said whooping cough can be prevented or less severe with a vaccine.
“This is a vaccine-preventable infection, and the whooping cough vaccine can certainly become less effective over time,” Moore said.
Rock Island County has had three cases since September. These cases are unrelated and the disease did not spread.
George Verastegui, public health administrator for the Rock Island Health Department, said the number of cases this year is not unusual.
“We just had a few cases like this here and there,” Verastegui said. “During the coronavirus outbreak, there were no cases, but the fact that there are three cases is not a big difference.”
