UK transport secretary resigns over 10-year-old mobile phone fraud scandal

LONDON (AP) British Transport Secretary Louise Haigh resigned Friday amid a decade-long fraud charge after she allegedly claimed her mobile phone was stolen.

In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Haigh said: “I remain fully committed to our political project, but I now believe that supporting you from an external government will yield the best results.

She said she appreciated that whatever the facts of the matter, they would inevitably impede the work of this Government and its ability to carry out the policies to which we are all committed.

The resignation came hours after Sky News and The Times of London newspaper reported that Hay had been charged with fraud after reporting that his work phone had been stolen following a 2013 robbery. She later said she had mistakenly placed the phone on a list of stolen items. .

She found her phone, turned it back on, and was summoned to police for questioning. Haigh pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and received a conditional discharge.

In a statement before his resignation, Haigh said he pleaded guilty on the advice of his attorney. Even though this was a real mistake that I didn't benefit from. The magistrate accepted all these arguments and sentenced me to the lowest possible outcome (dismissal).

Hay, 37, has represented the Sheffield constituency in northern England since 2015 and was appointed to the key transport post following the election of Mr Stammers' centre-left Labor party in July.

Starmer appointed Heidi Alexander, 49, as Haigh's successor. Alexander returned to parliament in the July general election after six years, part of which saw him take on a key post at London City Hall overseeing the capital's transport system.
