Rotary’s Work Leads to Polio-Free Designation in Africa | News
The Rotary Clubs fight to eradicate polio was a big win last week when the World Health Organization declared it to eradicate polio in Africa.
This designation was made after Nigeria was declared polio eradicated in the last case four years ago.
“It’s been a while,” said Alan Palmer, president of the Bowling Green Rotary Club. “We’ve been in Rotary’s PolioPlus program for years and are committed to eradicating polio.
“It’s very rewarding to work hard to reduce the world’s polio. That is, we still have to do in an ongoing effort to ensure that this moist illness is permanently suppressed. We are increasing work and money.”
Milestones are the result of many years of efforts by Rotary clubs to raise funds to eradicate polio, host awareness events and raise funds.
There are Rotary clubs in all 47 countries of the African region, with approximately 1,400 Rotary clubs in the region, approximately 32,000 Rotary members, and approximately $890 million donated to eradicate polio in the region.
“It’s not what happens after you think you’ve handled the last case,” Palmer said. “Many criteria need to be monitored, overseen, and verified before they are actually named (eradicated).”
According to Palmer, this designation is a major step, but there is still work to be done. The Rotary Club hopes to raise another $50 million this year to continue to protect children in Africa and eradicate wild poliovirus in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“The volunteers involved in this project are trying to reach those areas as much as possible and work hard to cure them until one day. We hope we can inform you that polio has been eradicated from the surface of the earth.” Said Palmer.
