Ticking remains a state issue even in the fall months
Warm summer days may come to an end, but the risk of mites and the diseases they cause remains high throughout the fall months.
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health recently issued a recommendation calling on residents to be vigilant for blood-sucking insects, especially black-legged mites that cause Lyme disease, for both humans and pets.
Black-legged mites are relatively rare in the state and are introduced by migratory birds in the spring. They grow into adults until summer and remain active in tall grass, brushes and wooded areas. That is, the exact type of terrain found in the Wakamou Valley and city parks.
Fortunately, there are ways to monitor things.
The state, along with researchers at the University of Saskatchewan, released the eTick app this spring, a program designed to identify insects from user-submitted photos. Information about the type of tick is returned promptly, along with the risk of tick-borne disease.
“Data received via the eTick platform can monitor the distribution and establishment levels of ticks, especially black ticks, and help monitor the risk of Lyme disease throughout the state.” “Although the risk of Lyme disease is low in Saskatchewan, it is still important to take precautions against mites.”
These precautions are as follows:
- Wear shorts, long-sleeved shirts, and shoes that do not stick out.
- Pull the socks on the legs of the pants to prevent mites from crawling on their feet.
- Wear light-colored clothing so that mites are easy to see.
- Use insect repellents containing DEET or icaridin. Apply the water repellent not only to clothing but also to the skin. Always read and follow the instructions.
- In Canada, clothing treated with the pesticide permethrin is approved for use by people over the age of 16.
- After going out, take a shower or bath as soon as possible to wash away loose mites and inspect for attached mites.
- Do a “whole body” tick check after you get out of yourself, your child, your pet.
If there are mites on your skin or pets:
- Carefully remove it with tweezers with a fine tip, and bring the tick’s mouth as close to the skin as possible.
- Pull it up slowly with firm and stable pressure.
- Be careful not to squeeze, crush, or puncture your body after removing it, as it may contain infectious fluids.
- Do not place petrolatum, gasoline, or other harmful substances on the attached mites. It may cause reverse mites.
- Send a photo of the tick using the eTick system and hang on the tick in case requested for further testing. Mites can be euthanized by putting them in a bag and storing them in the freezer for 24 hours.
- In Saskatchewan, all mites found in the fall can be of interest, such as black-tailed mites.
Fortunately, most mites found in Saskatchewan are not black-legged. American dog mites are the most prevalent, active from mid-April to the end of July, and Lyme disease cannot be prevalent.
Since April, a total of 3,022 ticks have been submitted to local health authorities, and only 11 have been identified as black ticks. Six of them were tested and three were positive for the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
