How to deal with anxiety about fires, epidemics, earthquakes, and civil unrest – Daily News

I am in my mid-seventies and have lived a lot in my life. I was never as affected by the change as I am now. I fear virus infection, fires, civil unrest, and even another earthquake. I live alone and am very careful about going out. How do I handle this? By nature, I am not an anxious person, but I am now. ER

Dear ER

It is understandable that we feel anxious because we are living through the most dramatic changes in our lives that affect how we live, work, learn, worship and even keep fit. According to The Elders Action Network, a movement of seniors to address the social and environmental crises of our time, we are living in a period of radical uncertainty.

HelpGuide, an online resource that provides evidence-based mental health education, offers some suggestions that may help.

Take action about what you can control: We can’t control the virus, the economy, or business or school opening. So what can we control? If you are concerned about the virus, we can wear a mask, wash our hands, avoid crowding, and follow the CDC’s recommendations. If we are concerned about our work, we can control the amount of energy devoted to searching the internet for work or communicating with contacts. Actions like these take us from “effective concern to effective problem solving,” according to HelpGuide.

Learning to accept uncertainty: Uncertainty is part of our daily life. When we cross the street, drive the highway and eat fast food, we are confident that the traffic will stop, we will not have an accident and the food is safe to eat. There is little chance that something bad will happen as a result of these activities, so we accept the risks. Identifying triggers that make us anxious can be helpful, as social media often focuses on worst-case scenarios. If this is a trigger, consider limiting exposure.

Focus on the present: Instead of worrying about the future, focus on today. By doing this you can interrupt the negative thoughts that will carry your thinking into the present. Mindfulness is an exercise that can help achieve current focus, relieve stress, and improve your mood.

Managing stress and anxiety: physical exercise is a natural remedy. Difficult to worry while walking, dancing, running, or squatting. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises also help. Add to this adequate sleep and a healthy diet can help conserve energy and prevent mood swings.

Lynn Eser, contributor to the Elder Action Network, writes about three stories we tell ourselves: The first is that everything will be fine; The second is our destiny. Third, we can create a more prosperous and just world. She points out that the three are happening at the same time and suggests that it’s up to us where we choose to put our hearts, our resources, and how we’ll live our lives.

Through these narratives, it offers the gifts of uncertainty by defining the freedoms we enjoy. For example, we are free to experience the immediate and true reality of the present moment rather than our fears or our hopes; Knowing about our relationships, understanding that we are all connected, and knowing what we do affects others. Eisler invites us to act with intention, love, wisdom, courage and uphold our vision of a more beautiful world.

These words matter during a period of radical uncertainty. However, it is also time to acknowledge that embracing such freedoms may be easier for some, not for others. Those who have experienced the death of a loved one, illness, job loss, not having enough food to eat, (called scarcity of food), feeling isolated and unable to fulfill mortgage or rent payments, may experience a difficult time Compared to those who are healthy and financially secure.

Here are some additional freedoms. We have the freedom to experience compassion, care for one another, connect and stay in touch. Let’s not forget the situation. Winston Churchill is quoted as saying, “An attitude is a small thing that makes a big difference.”

We hope a positive one will help us achieve a more prosperous and just world.

ER, Thank you for your important question and your honesty. We hope these tips help.

Stay safe and healthy, and be kind to yourself and others.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
