Harrison County reports outbreaks of three nursing homes
According to the Harrison County Health Department, COVID-19 is occurring in three of the four care facilities. Harrison County Public Health Supervisor Brad Brake told KETV Newswatch 7 that there were 186 COVID-19 cases in three nursing homes last month. The number includes residents and staff. “We are definitely a hotspot,” Brake said. “We are really seeing the impact of what we were trying to prevent.” About 43% of all confirmed cases in the county are from nursing homes. Brake said Woodbine’s Rose Vista Home had its first outbreak a few weeks ago in September. The first cases were seen within last week and a half at Dunlap’s Dunlap Specialty Care and Missouri Valley’s Longview Home. “Once you get in, it’s really hard to contain,” he said. Care was tested positive for COVID-19. At Rose Vista Home, 54 residents and 24 employees were infected with the virus, he said, with three of the COVID-19 deaths in five counties coming from care centers. Kelly Scheller is an assistant administrator for Longview Home and one of the co-owners with Longview Home Rose Vista Home. He said 18 residents and 24 staff were positive for COVID-19. According to Scheller, one resident and nine employees are in recovery. Witnessing the staff’s “heroes” during this time was “blessed,” Scheller said. He said the facility is currently taking steps to contain the spread and protect residents and staff. “We are prepared for this, we have many good practices, and we can push this virus back as a community,” Scheller said, “Good infection control in your home is in your community. It leads to good infection control, which benefits your care facility. ” On a public health Facebook page at Harrison County’s home, the agency wrote, “This is not just a care center issue, but a community issue.” The county’s 14-day positive rate is 22%. Of the total of 435 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 188 are currently recovering. Harrison County has only one hospital. As of Friday, only four people are hospitalized with COVID-19. “They definitely know they’re busy. They know they’re approaching capacity. We know it’s an area that’s starting to get pretty restricted in the ICU beds we’re concerned about,” Brake said. Said.
