The annual Earthquake Preparation Exercise is conducted on Thursday at 10:15. am International ShakeOut Day is always the third Thursday in October, and it should help people around the world know what to do when the Earth starts shaking.

In Wyoming, more than 5,400 people across the state have registered to take part in the exercises as of October 6. There was no participation in exercises in Park County despite being the most seismically active county in the state.

Thirteen of the 24 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale – those large enough that humans usually notice – were this year in Wyoming in Park County, all of which occurred in Yellowstone National Park.

“Yellowstone is one of the most seismically active in the United States, partly due to a thin crust and high heat flow associated with the volcanic system,” said James Mauch, a Wyoming Geological Survey geologist.

“The majority of earthquakes in and around Yellowstone are too small to be felt by humans, but there is a possibility of strong earthquakes in the area.”

In late September, nearly 100 small earthquakes struck Yellowstone on the same day. The park gets between 1,500 and 2,000 earthquakes per year, most of which are not felt by people.

Mauch said there was no specific strength of the quake in Yellowstone that Cody or Metitesi residents could sense.

“The earthquake’s severity – how intense the shaking is and how much damage it can cause – depends on many factors, such as the observer’s distance from the earthquake, the surface geology at the exact location where the earthquake is felt, and the depth of the earthquake,” Mauch said.

He said that although Wyoming is not on a major fault line, it is located on a network of faults that crisscross the Rocky Mountains from Nevada to northwestern Montana, called the Intermountain seismic belt.

“Additionally, northwestern Wyoming is home to the Yellowstone Volcanic System, which provides another source of earthquake activity,” Mauch said. “Although we may not feel earthquakes as frequently as people on the West Coast, earthquakes do occur and people are felt in Wyoming every year and there is a possibility of a devastating earthquake.”

WSGS recommends that people in Wyoming develop a plan in the event of a major earthquake, including creating a disaster response toolkit and participating in the Great Wyoming ShakeOut.

“In addition to practicing your response to the earthquake, ShakeOut is a good reminder to develop a personal or family disaster preparedness plan, and to organize and stock your emergency supply kit,” said Christina George, WSGS spokeswoman.

He leads the Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California on International Check Out Day. The Wyoming state website, shakeout.org/wyoming, contains information on how to register and plan trainings for families and other organizations.

The exercises include emergency radio recordings and an opportunity to practice the technique recommended by FEMA and other agencies: Drop, Cover, Hold On.

The official recommendation based on current knowledge, Drop, Cover and Hold On, tells anyone experiencing an earthquake on the ground, cover the back of their head with an arm and crawl under something strong, such as a desk or table, to be protected from falling debris and wait for the shaking to stop.

According to the US Geological Survey, occupants of vehicles must stop in an open area and apply the parking brake, while those outside must descend to the ground and cover with both arms.

International ShakeOut Day is free for anyone to participate in, and SCEC has specialist plans available for six different groups, from individuals and families to healthcare facilities.

WSGS offers participants prizes.

Emergency coordinators in the five districts with the largest number of participants will receive disaster toolkits.
