Inspired by her church, a recovered COVID-19 patient donates plasma
Daisy Malkina lives in a one-bedroom apartment with her parents, siblings, niece and nephew.
All but one sibling were tested positive for COVID-19.
“It was mentally and physically tired,” said Markina.
22-year-old Markina is a student at San Jose State University, but when the pandemic began, she lived with her family in Orange County, making it impossible to keep a social distance.
She and her family became ill in mid-May. Malkina was eventually hospitalized and suffered lung damage as a result of the virus.
When she recovered, she became a convalescent plasma donor and helped people who might be infected with the virus. She encourages other COVID-19 survivors to donate, if possible.
“If you’re not infected with a virus, follow the guidelines required by the government, but if you’re sadly infected with a virus, like me or my family, I’d like you to do so. Donate the plasma. This is what we need for our research and we can find the vaccine a day earlier. ”

Malkina was first worried about COVID-19 when she heard her neighbor test positive.
“It was too late, as we soon began to show signs in my family when we quarantined,” Malkina said.
Malkina’s mother was the first in the family to test positive and was immediately admitted to the hospital. Malkina was also positive and had been hospitalized for nearly a week.
She said her fever wouldn’t go down until one day doctors and nurses covered her with ice. Both women developed pulmonary ammonia because Markina’s mother is diabetic and Markina is pre-diabetic.
Shortness of breath, fever, chills, sitting and standing up were all physically exhausting for Malkina.
Only her brother escaped the virus.
Markin learned about plasma donations as a recovered COVID-19 patient from the Shincheonji Church of Jesus to which she belongs.
“My church is a big part of why I’m doing this,” she said. “It was a great relief to know that they were taking action. It was my brothers and sisters in my church who were doing this themselves, so not only donating, but also that I wanted to stay out of my way to pay attention to my efforts. “
A month after recovery, Malkina donated plasma for the first time. She is already planning to make a second appointment.
How does convalescent plasma donation work?
Plasma contains antibodies that help the body fight the disease.
