New studies suggest that breast-fed babies have fewer behavioral problems
A new study suggests that children who are breastfed for more than three months have fewer behavioral problems than those who do not.
This study, said to be the first to track behavior up to adolescence, examined the long-term effects of breastfeeding as a baby on the behavior of children aged 3, 5, 7, 11, and 14 years. ..
Researchers have found that people who are breastfed for more than three months are less prone to social and emotional setbacks such as anxiety attacks, friendship struggles, and problems with concentration.
This was found to be true even taking into account other influential factors such as mother’s education, mother’s psychological distress, and family socioeconomic status.
The World Health Organization recommends that babies should only be breastfed for the first 6 months of life.
Lydia Speyer, lead author of the University of Edinburgh’s Faculty of Philosophy, Psychology and Linguistic Sciences, said:
“Our research strengthens the case of public health strategies that promote breastfeeding, if possible, as we have identified potential behavioral benefits.”
Breastfeeding babies under 3 months are associated with a variety of behavioral difficulties, but previous studies (mainly focused on early childhood) were inconclusive.
A new study, led by the University of Edinburgh and Lancaster University, focused on the long-term effects of breastfeeding.
Researchers did so by analyzing a questionnaire about the strengths and difficulties of children completed by parents and teachers.
The data was taken from the Millennium Cohort Study, which tracks the lives of about 20,000 people born in the United Kingdom in 2000-02.
About 11,000 people (children, parents, teachers) contributed to the latest research.
The study concludes that: “This study provides further evidence consistent with the idea that breastfeeding plays an important role in the development of socio-emotional behavior in children.
“The longer the breastfeeding period, the less behavioral problems we have in the short and long term, but future research is needed to elucidate the mechanism.
“The results support current health care policies that encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies only for the first six months of life.”
This study does not consider explaining why breast-fed babies have fewer behavioral problems, but it is believed that there are some potential explanations.
Dr. Speyer said breastfeeding can release the so-called “love hormone” oxytocin in both mothers and children, which can have a positive effect on mood and reduce stress.
Breast milk also contains oxytocin and fatty acids, which are important for brain development.
This study is published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.
