Wisconsin plans to release a contact tracing app in December
Madison (WKOW) — The Wisconsin Department of Health is developing a new program to support contact tracing in the state.
A DHS spokesperson says the state has begun working with Apple and Google to develop an exposure notification application.
As the virus spread rapidly throughout the state this fall, the DHS struggled to hire enough contact tracers to properly track people at risk of getting sick.
Many community health departments have moved to a contact tracing crisis model. With this model, staff cannot contact anyone who has been in close contact with someone who tested positive.
The Wisconsin COVID-19 notification app will be released from mid to late December.
“We are excited to adopt another tool that will help us to notify the people we are in contact with quickly and conveniently since we tested positive for COVID-19. Prompt notification allows you to quarantine more quickly in the hope of slowing the spread of the virus. “ A DHS spokesman said in a statement.
At least 15 other states have similar mobile apps that provide pop-up notifications when you’re near someone who tests positive for the coronavirus.
The contact tracing app uses Bluetooth to ping a constantly changing code on a nearby phone. If a person using this feature tests positive for the virus, they will get a PIN from the health authorities and connect to the phone. Other phones that have been nearby in the last two weeks will receive an alert.
According to experts, the app is private and anonymous. No data is collected about users or their location.
