Thousands of Texas pediatric patients eligible for COVID vaccine

Texas Children’s Hospital Dr. Jim Versalovich, chief pediatrician, said thousands of patients were vaccinated.
Dr. Versalovich said the hospital identified more than 85,000 patients in the healthcare system covered by the COVID-19 vaccine in Phase 1B.
“These are adolescents and young adults with underlying medical conditions, and these underlying medical conditions put them at greater risk for COVID-19,” said Dr. Versalovic.
He said these patients suffered from things like obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, among others.
Dr. Versalovich has seen first-hand the effects of the virus on children and young adults.
“During this pandemic, I took care of many children hospitalized with COVID-19,” he said. “Some people have primary COVID pneumonia. Others have COVID-19 in addition to their chronic condition.”
Since January 12, Texas Children’s has vaccinated more than 5,500 of these eligible patients.
Dr. Versalovich said it is now a race against time to reach as many patients as possible.
