Will the COVID-19 vaccine work if there are no side effects?
As more people are vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccine daily, there are more reports of possible side effects.
Arm pain was said to be the most common reaction Wendell Hoffman, MD, Sanford Health Infectious Disease Specialist. He said the response was about as common and acceptable as the response to flu and tetanus vaccinations.
Other less commonly reported side effects include flu-like symptoms: headache, malaise, fever, chills, 24-48 hours. It’s a natural immune response, Dr. Hoffman said. But what if you don’t feel any side effects?
“If you get this vaccine and there are no side effects, it doesn’t mean that you haven’t started a strong immune response,” he said.
The first COVID-19 vaccine uses messenger RNA to provoke a reaction in the immune system as if the body were infected.
According to Dr. Hoffman, when vaccinated, the body responds with an army of immune responders called B cells and T cells. B cells are like archers, special ops strikers that attack perceived threats from a distance by sending antibodies. T cells are like infantry and are directly involved in threats with spears, swords, and shields.
If antibody levels are low, don’t forget the army of remaining T cells. They work together to immunize you, Dr. Hoffman said.
He added that vaccination is the safest way to achieve herd immunity. That is, enough people are vaccinated to prevent more vulnerable people from getting sick. And possible side effects should not prevent you from being vaccinated.
“Don’t be afraid of the COVID vaccine,” he said. “They are safe and effective, and you provide great service to your fellow humans by being vaccinated yourself.
