With 69 overdose deaths in March, Kaiyahoga County has reached a pace comparable to the record number of deaths in 2017.

“This is a serious development and the community needs to be aware of this surge in deaths from overdose,” said Dr. Thomas Gilson, a medical inspector at Kaiyahoga County, in a news release. “Some preliminary data suggest that the minority community may be more vulnerable to this outbreak.”
Toxicity studies have not identified which drugs are responsible for the proliferation of deaths from overdose. In 2017, fentanyl, cocaine, and carfentanil were the most common drugs found to be responsible for death from overdose.
The county offers short-term and long-term interventions to reduce the number of overdose, Gilson said.
“Risk reduction strategies such as naloxone kits and fentanyl test strips are available for free and can help save lives,” Gilson said.
