North Dakota influenza numbers remain low at the end of the season
Bismarck, North Dakota (KFYR)-Because of the focus last year on COVID-19, many of us may have forgotten another virus, the flu.
Spring is usually the end of the flu season, but there were few flu seasons in North Dakota. But health experts say that doesn’t mean you can disappoint your vigilance.
So far, the State Department of Health has reported only 196 cases of influenza this season, starting August 1, 2020. This is very different from the previous year, when 12,490 cases were recorded at this time.
“Since this flu season coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, many precautions taken against COVID-19 may have helped prevent flu,” said ND’s influenza surveillance coordinator. Levi Schlosser says. Ministry of Public Health.
Vaccination may increase as another cause of fewer cases of influenza.
“Last year, influenza vaccination rates were actually slightly higher, not so high, but slightly higher than in previous vaccination years,” said state immunization director Molly Howell. ..
North Dakota may appear unaffected by the flu this year, but Schlosser says he’s not complacent.
“Although we are nearing the end of the flu season, both flu and COVID-19 are still prevalent in the community,” Schlosser said.
Schlosser says it’s hard to know how this flu season will affect the next season, but keep in mind proper hand-washing and mitigation efforts such as coughing and sneezing.
It’s a good idea to get a flu shot in the fall, but if you’re still interested in getting a flu shot, it may not be too late. Schlosser tells you to consult your doctor to determine what is best for you.
