10 Youngest Emmy Winners for Best Picture / Limited Supporting Actor
In 1979, a British parliamentarian Jeremy Thorpe was acquitted of conspiring to murder his former lover, Norman Josiffe, just weeks after the scandal put an end to his political career. His seat has since been occupied by four other representatives from North Devon and, since his death in 2014, his story has been dramatized both in literary form and for television. A Very English Scandal aired in 2018 and received four Primetime Emmy nominations the following year, winning one for the supporting performance of Ben Whishaw like Josiffe.
Whishaw, 38, was an age-appropriate choice for the role, as Josiffe was 39 when the trial ended. However, he had to act from the age of 21 in flashback scenes, and the two-decade age difference between him and the show’s frontman. Hugh grant was almost 10 years taller than that of Josiffe and Thorpe. At the time of his victory, Whishaw was the ninth youngest winner in his category, and he now sits one spot lower on the list.
Since 1961, a total of 56 actors have won Emmys for their supporting roles in non-continuing programs, starting with Roddy McDowall (Our American Heritage: Not Without Honor). Two of the winners pocketed two or more trophies.
