Obituary: Henry Woolf was a star actor, in Saskatoon and beyond

Henry Woolf, who died last week at the age of 91, taught at the University of Saskatchewan from 1983 to 1997, inspiring an entire generation of actors. He was also artistic director of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan from 1991 to 2001.
Woolf, who was born in London in 1930, worked in his early years as an actor in theater, film and television in the UK. His film credits include a dual role in the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975, and he also played a recurring character on the popular mid-1970s British sitcom Steptoe and Son, and also appeared in the science series. -fiction Dr. Who alongside Tom Baker.

In 1965, Woolf married actress / director Susan Williamson while they were teammates in the hit play The Marat / Sade, which was set in London, and then for five months on Broadway. He also starred in a 1967 film of the play.
Longtime StarPhoenixarts reporter Cam Fuller reported in a 2017 article that one of Woolf’s favorite stories was telling an elderly Saskatoon woman that he and his wife met on Broadway.
When the woman assumed he was talking about Broadway Avenue in Saskatoon, I thought that was where I wanted to live. They will not allow me to be conceited. The people here are unpretentious, remembers Woolf.
Woolf moved to Canada in 1978 to teach in the drama department at the University of Alberta, before moving to Saskatoon.
He was a childhood friend of British playwright Harold Pinter, having met him at the Hackney Downs School for Boys. He became a member of what was called the Hackney gang. Woolf was the last surviving member.

Woolf also wrote a memoir, Barcelona is in Trouble, and in his 2017 StarPhoenix interview, indicated that the book was far from an end-of-life decision. In an article on the book, Fuller said it provided a glimpse into Woolf’s unconventional childhood, where he grew up in poverty and endured the bombing of World War II night after night.
I started writing three weeks after becoming an actor, as if something unconscious was saying: Your life will no longer be yours. It’ll be up to whoever hires you, and they’ll ask you to dress in fun clothes and be someone other than yourself.
Woolf went on to perform in retirement, in London and New York and even in Saskatoon, appearing in Waiting for Godot in 2008 and The Caretaker in 2013 at the Persephone Theater.
He was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2014-2015 and an award of continuing excellence in his name is presented annually by Saskatoon and Area Theater Award.
