83-year-old “Shaft” actor – The Hollywood Reporter
Tommy Lane, an actor and stuntman who has worked in films including Cotton arrives in Harlem, Live and Let Die and Tree, is dead. He was 83 years old.
Lane died at Florida Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale on Monday after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his daughter Kamala Lane announced.
Lane has also appeared in other films like Shamus (1973), with Burt Reynolds; The pilot (1980), directed by and with Cliff Robertson; and Eureka (1983), edited by Nicolas Roeg.
In Gordon Parks Tree (1971) Lane played a gangster named Leroy employed by Harlem crime boss Bumpy (Moses Gunn) who ends up fall from an office window to his death during a fight with Richard Roundtree’s private investigator.
“It is cold shit, throwing my man Leroy out the window. I just picked up my man and threw him out the fucking window, ”says Willy (Drew Bundini Brown), Bumpy’s partner.
Born December 17, 1937 in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Lane appeared in episodes of NBC Pinball, shot in Florida, in 1964 and ’66, then played a guy known as “44” in Ossie Davis’ Cotton arrives in Harlem (1970).
In addition to Live and Let Die (1973), Lane credits included Come back Charleston Blue (1972), Ganja & Hess (1973), More blue sky (1983) and televisions Simon & Simon.
He was also a jazz musician who played trumpet and bugle at the Blue Note in New York City in the 1980s.
Survivors include his wife, Raquel Bastias-Lane; seven children; a stepson; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
