Book review: Suzanne Collins revisited the world of “The Hunger Games” with a new prequel.

“The songbirds and snakes ballad” will have fanatics from “The Hunger Games” who will release their used volumes to see how designer Suzanne Collins connected this prequel to her mega-popular three-volume dystopian series.

“Snakes” takes us back to the 10th anniversary of the Legendary Games, where each year 24 children / tributes (one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts) are selected to fight to the death to remind the rebels who won the bloody civil war between the capital and the districts. All Panem citizens watch television, but over time, interest has declined. The city is still under reconstruction, with lots of ruins and rubble in the streets, and the Games bear witness to this. It takes place in a former bombed sports arena, far from the splendor and pageantry of later years.

It stars Coriolanus Snow, the eventual tyrannical president of the “Games” trilogy, as an 18-year-old high school student, one of 24 “mentors” selected to guide the current harvest of tributes with a mission to find a way to perk the Games. The most creative wins a college scholarship. Snow, the descendant of a family from the capital, lost his parents and the family his fortune during the war. He lives with his grandmother and a cousin in their once plush penthouse, hiding the fact that they are broke. He desperately needs this scholarship.

But, suspiciously, things turn against him when he is placed last on the list of mentors, receiving the girl from District 12 in tribute. Fans of “Games” will know that this is not necessarily a handicap, but Lucy Gray is not Katniss Everdeen, although she has talents. Coriolanus falls in love and sets off using hooks or scammers to help him win the Games and, of course, guarantee his purse.

We soon discover that powerful characters manipulate the circumstances while preparing Coriolanus for the future. But he still has to take matters into his own hands to respect the family motto: “Snow is falling at the top”.

A prequel that will certainly make you re-read the originals.
