Major Wakanda Bounce For Marvel, Memorial For Late Black Panther Actor

Let there be no doubt: Marvel Studios is back at the top with record-breaking opening weekend ratings for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, handing another November box office crown.

Projected totals for the weekend’s first haul soared to $180 million and $330 million worldwide.

The film took 2022’s second-highest opening behind Marvels other 2022 epic, “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ released last December is still the highest post COVID-19 theatrical opening, leading Deadline magazine to say Marvels total tally represents 21% of all domestic movie gross in the post-COVID box office era.

But big dollars don’t equal quality. And yet, Wakanda delivered both with unprecedented scale and depth.

It’s likely a major expiration for Marvel Studios, in some ways, as many of the company’s latest projects, from Disney Plus shows to big-screen releases, have garnered middling to outright hateful reviews online (see She Hulk and Thor: Love and Thunder).

I’ve always enjoyed both as they were so true to their source comics in many ways, but fans cried out for a return to serious MCU tones and with this they get that and more.

Ok, so consider the casual, non-comic reading viewer, who during parts of this journey won’t be as sold on characters they haven’t yet gotten to know, like Robert Downey Jr.’s “Iron Man.” at the end of the Infinity Saga.

And we see lately, the YouTube channel’s comments and influencers have religiously taken to a practice of hating Marvel.

It’s also clear that the people trying to provide political commentary to influence the quality of these movies have forgotten how to sit down and just enjoy something without over-analyzing.

The thing is, while some of Marvel’s movies and shows have been less than clear in their connection to an overarching story arc, they know where they’re headed, and I’d say given their success so far, it is more useful to know that everything will pull together again towards another epic finale.

“Wakanda” has little to criticize and will do pretty well, I believe in Marvels greatest hits lineup.

All of this despite the much-noted absence of lead actor Chadwick Boseman, who has enthralled fans with his portrayal of King TChalla, Wakanda’s Black Panther protector, in his few Marvel movie appearances.

Just over two years ago, Boseman unexpectedly passed away from a hidden battle with cancer that he even kept hidden from his fellow actors.

The first Black Panther film would go on to win three out of seven Oscars for music, set and costumes, being the first superhero film to receive Best Picture consideration.

The sequel actually takes the original film up a notch, as the emotional depth of the stories becomes more complex with the passage of TChallas and is led by stellar acting performances, especially from Angela Bassetts’ portrayal of the Queen. Wakandan.

Hello Oscars, anyone?

Currently, Bassett is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

The stakes are higher, the antagonists are solid, and the dramatic tension is palpable. There’s even a subtle nod to racial reconciliation if you pay attention in the final scenes.

Bosemans Black Panther would have proven to be an integral part of many upcoming Marvel storylines if he hadn’t died, but we got the best story possible without him here.

And true to their word, Marvel didn’t recast Bosemans character TChalla, but instead brilliantly weaved Boseman’s actual loss into the story with what is an incredible and thoughtful tribute.

I don’t think the homage aspect of the movie could have been executed any better than it was here, but I won’t spoil my reasoning on that either.

What I can do is echo what one Marvel social media influencer said, I couldn’t tell if the cast mourned the character or their deceased friend and castmate.

But either way, kudos to the family and the cast for allowing Boseman’s memory to find its way into this project.

Tenoch Huertas’ first introduction to a landmark Marvel Comics character was no less than satisfying and often well above average.

Some might disagree with the backstory of Namor and the Atlanteans being changed a bit, but I have absolutely no problem with that since the tone of the story remains.

In the first confrontation of the often impenetrable Wakanda Special Forces female guard, the Dora Milaje, Namor and the Atlanteans prove that they will be a formidable force and will not be easily shaken.

Namor is still the opportunistic double agent you’ve been getting in the comics since 1939.

His tribe hails from an ancient Maya civilization, which like the first Black Panther, also derived its powers from the spectacular benefits of a land teeming with the rare resource of Vibranium that outside nations are trying to seize.

The struggle for resources between neighboring nations is something that fits many stories today.

The MCU introduced Namor here as one more mutant in the Marvel pantheon, as they slowly move towards Marvel plunging into the use of all of their X-Men character licenses that they purchased from the 20-year-old.^e Century Fox a few years ago.

And I have to say, I would love a pair of ankle wings that make me fly, like Namor.

While we have a lot of definite comic book familiarity, we can’t have movies that just play to beat like they did in the comics. They would quickly become boring and that’s part of Marvels magic storytelling formula, changing things up, while tying them all together.

Marvels boss Kevin Feige will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest producers in movie history.

Taking threads from ever-changing story arcs and somehow weaving them into an overarching narrative without watering down or tangling up any single story element takes expertise.

That’s what makes Marvel special, when I can watch a totally new character return to that very first MCU movie in 2008 with just one simple gesture. And then the wonderful, amazing, catchy, battle anthem, blood pumping music.

But to get a better idea, you have to go see what I’m talking about. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is currently in theaters.
