The Actor's Studio of St. Louis presents “The Whale”

“The Whale” continues through April 21 at the Gaslight Theater.

ST. LOUIS The whale starring Brendan Fraser was one of the biggest films of 2022, earning Fraser the Academy Award for Best Actor. But before conquering the big screen, The whale was a play that was taking over stages across the country. Now, thanks to St. Louis Actors Studioyou can catch it Live at Lou.

It is a story of redemption and hope. The whale by playwright Samuel D. Hunter follows the character of Charlie, a morbidly obese online writing instructor. The 600-pound man tries to reconnect with his rebellious daughter Ellie because he's sure the end is near for him.

The role of Charlie is played by William Roth, the founder of the St. Louis Actors Studio.

“You have to learn a lot about how big this character is, how big he really is, how big he is emotionally and how he deals with the world around him,” Roth said.

The role of Ellie is played by Nadja Kapetanovich, a 17-year-old Alton high school student.

“She came in and auditioned. And I was blown away. She's so talented,” said the series' director, Annamaria Pileggi. “It’s what I would call an acting piece…you can immerse yourself in the intensity of this emotional adventure.”

“You see everything through him. So I think he's more the center of this universe and the others, you see other satellites around him. And I think when it's live and on stage, you get that feeling a lot more because there's no close-up, right? You see Charlie's World all the time, so in that sense, I think the difference between cinema and theater? is very felt,” she said.

William and Anna met years ago and now work together frequently putting on shows at the Gaslight Theater in the Central West End. It's a small, intimate setting perfect for a show like The whale.

The whale continues until April 21 at the Gaslight Theater located in 360 N. Boyle Avenue, Saint Louis, MO 63108. Shows take place Thursday to Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
