Abu Taher Mohammad Shamsuzzaman (Bengali: ; September 10, 1941 (February 20, 2021),[1] was a Bangladeshi film and television actor, director and screenwriter.[2] He was awarded the Ekushey Padak Award in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh.[3] He has won the Bangladesh National Film Awards five times for his roles in What to give? (1987), Madam Fuli (1999), Churiwala (2001), My Bosena Porar Table E (2009) and Chorabali (2012).[1]
Youth and career[edit]
Shamsuzzaman was born in a Bengali Muslim family in his maternal house at Daulatpur, Noakhali on 10 September 1941. His paternal ancestral house is at Bholakot Boro Bari in Ramganj, Lakshmipur district. His father was Nuruzzaman, a wakil who worked with AK Fazlul Huq, and his mother was Nurunnisa Begum. Shamsuzzaman was the eldest of five brothers and three sisters.[4] Growing up, he didn't plan on becoming an actor, he wanted to be a doctor.
His family moved to Dhaka and lived in Debendranath Das Lane in Old Dhaka. He began his studies in Dhaka at Pogose School, where he was friends with Prabir Mitra, who would also become an actor.[5] His film career began with filmmaker Udayan Chowdhury as an assistant film director. “Manusher Bhagban” And “Bishwokanya”. He made his breakthrough through his role in the film “Nayanmoni” (1976), directed by Amjad Hossain.[1] Previously, he played the role of Ramzan in the play Sangsaptakbroadcast in 1960.[2]

According to an investigation report by the “Nilima Ibrahim Committee”, a six-member committee headed by educationist Nilima Ibrahim, Shamsuzzaman was suspended from television and radio programs due to his alleged role in favor of the Pakistan Army. during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. According to him; During the Liberation War, the Pakistan Army forced him to play an alleged role in favor of Pakistan. [6]
Private life[edit]
Shamsuzzaman married Runy Begum in 1968. They had three sons and three daughters.[5] On March 13, 2012, his younger son ATM Kholikuzzaman Kushol (1977-2023) murdered his elder son ATM Kamaluzzaman Kabir (1975-2012) by stabbing him with a knife. Shamsuzzaman testified in court and in 2014 Kushol was sentenced to life in prison.[7][8] On October 30, 2023, ATM Kholikuzzaman was found dead in the Barishal Jayanti River.[9]

Shamsuzzaman died at his residence in Sutrapur area of Dhaka on February 20, 2021 around 9 am. He had long suffered from various illnesses due to old age.[14][15]
