Actor Mithun Chakraborty and singer Usha Uthup conferred Padma awards

Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty, singer Usha Uthup, former Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik and former vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu, were among the 132 eminent personalities who received Padma awards from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here on Monday (April 22).

Naidu, Pathak, who received the award posthumously, and famous Bharatanatyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam were awarded the Padma Vibhushan.

Actor Mithun Chakraborty, singer Usha Uthup, former Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik and industrialist Sitaram Jindal were awarded the Padma Bhushan.

The highest civilian distinctions

The Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honors in the country, are awarded in three categories Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

The awards are given in various disciplines or fields of activity: arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, business and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, public service, etc.

The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high standard and the Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.

The awards are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day.

132 Padma awards for 2024

For 2024, the President had approved the award of 132 Padma awards, including two duo cases (in one duo case, the award counts as one).

The list includes five Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 110 Padma Shri awards.

At least 30 of the awardees are women and the list also includes eight people from the Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI category and nine posthumous awardees.

While almost half of the winners received their prizes on Monday April 22, the others should receive them next week.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, among others, were present at the function.
