Review: ‘Sebring’ and ‘Stuntwomen’ reveal Hollywood history
Two new Hollywood documentaries are giving some overlooked people their due: the female stuntmen and Jay Sebring, the pioneering hairstylist usually relegated to a footnote in the history of the Manson murders.

Stuntwomen is packed with stunning footage of some of the most memorable female stunts in movie history. There’s the helicopter rescue of a car flying over a bridge in True Lies, with Jamie Lee Curtis barely exiting (stunt performed by Donna Keegan). Theres Trinity’s death-defying motorcycle crosses traffic the wrong way round in The Matrix Reloaded (Carrie-Anne Moss voiced by Debbie Evans). There’s Black Widow making her way through several Marvel movies (it’s Heidi Moneymaker doing the kick for Scarlett Johansson).
In fact, there is so much bravery on the part of so many skilled stuntmen that most viewers risk losing track of who is who. The featured stunt girls are featured once, briefly, at the front of the film, and then mostly unidentified again, though they were treated to a number of their behind-the-scenes reminiscences. There is no timeline; the documentary is rather organized by subject: how the women started to do stunts in front of the camera; prove they could do them, rather than male performers wearing wigs and dresses; the breathtaking driving skill of the legendary Debbie Evans; how rare it is for stunt girls to qualify as stunt coordinator; etc.
Based on the book by Mollie Gregorys and narrated by Michelle Rodriguez, April Wrights’ film moves fast and maintains great energy. While the result can be scattered at times, the accomplishments of these badass professionals are worth seeing, especially if, like this writer, you think an Oscar category for stuntmen is long overdue.

Jay Sebring …. Cutting to the Truth is an impressive directorial debut for actor Anthony DiMaria, nephew of the subject of documentaries. Sebring revolutionized male hairstyle in Hollywood in the ’60s, helping to create the looks of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. He was friends with Dennis Hopper, Quincy Jones, and Bruce Lee, and his romances included actresses BarBara Luna and Sharon Tate.
This is probably where you heard his name: he was one of four others killed along with Tate by the Manson family in August 1969.
The point of DiMarias’ thrilling and compelling documentary is that there was much more to his uncle than just being one of the others in an infamous murder spree. Through images, photos and memories of friends and family members of Sebrings, the filmmaker describes a dynamic and artistic person with failures, successes and loves.
The sleek film underscores how much of the highly questionable portraits of Sebring circulated in the media after his death, obscuring the real man. For example, while an article in Time magazine speculated shortly after the murders that Sebring was racist, Quincy Jones totally rejects the notion.
The documentary travels back and forth in time effectively to create the sensation of two trains inevitably colliding. There’s the arc of Sebrings’ meteoric rise, his financial woes and romantic calamities, with the all-time-consuming night of August 8, 1969 looming in the distance.
