Patricia Bosworth, actor who became famous biographer, dies of coronavirus
Patricia Bosworth, known for her role opposite Audrey Hepburn in the 1959 film The Nuns Story, her biographies of Hollywood luminaries and her own famous memories, died in Manhattan on April 2. She was 86 years old.
Bosworth’s daughter-in-law, Fia Hatsav, told the New York Times that the author died of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus.
Member of the Actors Studio during his golden age under Lee Strasberg, Bosworth studied alongside Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Jane Fonda. In the 1950s and 1960s, she appeared in a number of Broadway plays, including Inherit the Wind, as well as TV shows like Naked City and “The Patty Duke Show” and movies.
During the 1960s, Bosworth gave up becoming a journalist, writing for the New York Times and magazines such as New York, Mirabella, and Working Woman largely on the entertainment industry and the many fixtures with which she had befriended the Actors Studio. In 1994, the editor at the time, Tina Brown, hired her as editor for Vanity Fair.
Bosworth has also written acclaimed biographies of Fonda, Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and photographer Diane Arbus.
His biography on Arbus served as the basis for the 2006 film “Fur: an imaginary portrait of Diane Arbus“, which starred Nicole Kidman.
Daughter of Bartley Crum, the famous lawyer who defended the Hollywood Ten, writers who refused to cooperate on summons from the House Un-American Activities Committee and Anna Gertrude Bosworth, criminal journalist turned novelist, Bosworth was born in San Francisco in 1933.
In addition to his biographies of stars and artists, Bosworth wrote two memoirs, “Anything Your Little Heart Desires” from 1997 and 2017 “The men in my life“, who recounted his career and his loves in the 1950s, as well as the death of his father and brother, both by suicide.
