JI agrees to oppose the collection of local taxes via KE invoices on all forums – Journal

KARACHI: Karachi’s Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said the party will resist the decision of the PPP-led Sindh government to collect local taxes through electricity bills.

Addressing a press conference at JI Karachi’s headquarters, Idara Noor-i-Haq, he said he also rejected the committee formed by the government to occupy the cemeteries.

He said the collection of local taxes through electricity bills was a sheer injustice, adding that the issue would be discussed on all available forums.

JI would protest the payment of electricity bills if the decision was not withdrawn, he said. The Sindh government had already withheld billions of rupees as the grant tax payable in Karachi, he noted.

Immediate announcement of LG election required

He questioned the government of Sindh on the volume of taxes collected by the feudal lords and capitalists of the province.

He said that the feudal lords and capitalists of Sindh made a large number of people their slaves while the government of Sindh, supported by them, exploited the masses in the urban areas of the province, especially in Karachi.

Speaking about K-Electric, the JI leader said the country’s electric utilities, including the private company operating in Karachi, sent out bills for 37 days, instead of 30 days. However, he said, the government and Nepra took no action against KE in a blatant display of dishonesty.

Responding to a question about the cantonment areas, he said that the PPP, PTI and MQM had many chances in the cantonment areas, but they never kept their promises.

He expressed the hope that the preparations for the local government elections might have been completed by the Pakistan Election Commission. He added that it was the duty of the ECP to ensure free and fair elections on time in addition to resolving issues immediately.

The JI leader called on the Sindh government to immediately announce the holding of elections in local bodies.

He said an empowered LG institution was mandatory to address the chronic issues facing the citizens of Karachi, but the three ruling parties did not want the election to take place.

Mr Rehman claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan treated Karachi like a daughter-in-law. The prime minister postponed his Sunday visit to Karachi to avoid questions about the 1,100 billion rupee package, he said, and said the PTI government should show the package implementation report.

He said the PPP started Murtaza Wahab as an administrator of Karachi, but the mindset behind the introduction of a politician was feudalism.

He highlighted the contribution of the late Niamatullah Khan in the development of the city and in particular the K-III and K-IV projects.
