Maneka denied differences with wife caused by Imran: Bushras' lawyer

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and former PTI chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi on Tuesday failed to get relief in an illegal marriage case before Eidul Fitr after Rizwan Abbasi, the lawyer of the former Bushra's husband, Khawar Maneka, again failed to appear in court, leading the judge to declare that he would pronounce the verdict at the next hearing, even if Abbasi skipped the hearing again.

Islamabad District and Sessions Judge Shah Rukh Arjumand heard the appeals, seeking suspension of the sentence awarded to Imran and Bushra in the case.

Speaking on the occasion, Bushra's lawyer Usman Gill said the trial court was hearing the matter urgently. Several people were unable to record their statements in court, he said, adding that the suspects in the case were charged in their absence.

Gill said the trial court deprived the suspects of a fair trial by failing to meet legal requirements. He lamented that during the hearing on the American encryption case, the defendant's lawyer arrived late in court. But a public prosecutor was appointed in his place and the court gave the decision, he said, adding that Abbasi did not appear in court today and I can say with certainty that he will not appear for a week.

Bushra's lawyer added that the trial court would hold the hearing till late night. One day, the hearing started at 10 a.m. and continued until 11:30 p.m. after the court asked the lawyers to present their final arguments, he recalled.

Gill said Maneka had divorced Bushra three times. Now what else is left in the case? he questioned and cited the decisions handed down by the courts of different sessions in matters of divorce. He maintained that when Maneka had divorced Bushra three times, then there was no question of patching up.

The video of Maneka's statement about his ex-wife was also played in court. Subsequently, referring to Maneka's statement, Gill said Maneka had said that he was now Bushra's ex-husband. In his statement, Maneka had described his ex-wife as the most pious woman in the world, the lawyer said, adding that Maneka had also denied that differences had developed between him and Bushra because of Imran.

The video of Nikah Khawan Mufti Saeed's statement to a senior journalist was also played in court in which he spoke about Imran's marriage to Bushra and the controversy surrounding their iddat period. Lawyer Salman Akram Raja said Saeed, who was also a witness in the case, had said that Aun Chaudhry had met him. The lawyer told the court that Saeed said he still had the same opinion on the Imran-Bushras marriage and iddat that he had expressed earlier. Quoting Bushra, he said she was satisfied with the validity of her marriage.

Raja said Imran was of the view that such cases were filed for his victimization. Those who fabricated these cases were under the impression that it would harm PTI's popularity among the masses. But the latter proved them wrong by voting massively in favor of the party candidates in the legislative elections, he explained.

The lawyer also complained that the trial court did not give him time to present evidence in the case. Nikah was celebrated in Lahore, while the case was filed here in Islamabad, he complained. He argued that in the absence of any evidence, the suspects were acquitted in the case. He said Maneka's lawyer Rizwan Abbasi deliberately did not appear today. He wasted valuable court time, he added.

Delivering the decision at today's hearing, the judge said the complainant had not presented his medical certificate. If the complainant fails to appear at the next hearing, the hearing will not be adjourned, the judge said categorically.
