Erdogan says halting trade with Israel was aimed at forcing Gaza ceasefire: Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday his government's decision to suspend trade with Israel was aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.
We have taken certain steps to force Israel to accept a ceasefire and increase the amount of humanitarian aid going into Gaza, Erdogan told businessmen in Istanbul.
Annual trade between the two countries represents approximately $7 billion.
We will monitor the consequences of this measure which we have taken in coordination and consultation with the business community.
The Turkish leader later told reporters: Until now, Israel has mercilessly killed 40,000 to 45,000 Palestinians. As Muslims, we could not stand idly by.
Erdogan said Turkey knows we made the right choice.
Erdogan's comments came after the UN humanitarian office said an Israeli military offensive in Rafah would endanger the lives of hundreds of thousands of Gazans.
Turkey stopped all exports and imports to and from Israel on Thursday, the Turkish Commerce Ministry announced, citing the “worsening humanitarian tragedy” in the Palestinian territories.
Separately, two Palestinian prisoners' associations said Thursday that a senior Palestinian doctor, Adnan Al-Bursh, had died in an Israeli prison after more than four months in detention. They accused Israel of being responsible for his death.
