Turkey opens another ancient Byzantine church as a mosque

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan officially opened a former Byzantine church in Istanbul as a mosque on Monday, four years after his government designated it a Muslim house of prayer, despite criticism from neighboring Greece.

Turkey officially converted Chora's Church of the Savior, known as Kariye in Turkish, into a mosque in 2020, shortly after similarly transforming Istanbul's iconic Hagia Sophia into a home of Muslim prayer.

Both conversions drew praise from Muslim worshipers, but also criticism from Greece and other countries who had urged Turkey to protect important Byzantine-era monuments. Both are inscribed on the United Nations World Heritage List.

Like Hagia Sophia, which was a church for centuries and then a mosque for centuries more, the Chora functioned as a museum for decades before being transformed into a mosque. The official launch of Choras as a mosque was, however, delayed as the structure was later restored.

Erdogan on Monday remotely presided over a ceremony marking the opening of the Chora and other recently restored structures from a conference room in his palace in Ankara.

May he bring good luck, Erdogan said during the televised event.

The church, located near Istanbul's ancient city walls, is famous for its elaborate mosaics and frescoes. It dates from the 4th century, although the building took its current form in the 11th-12th centuries.

The structure served as a mosque under Ottoman rule before being converted into a museum in 1945.

Greece had criticized the Turkish government's decision to convert it back into a mosque, accusing Ankara of insulting the character of another world heritage site.

The decisions to turn Hagia Sophia and Chora into mosques were seen as moves to shore up the conservative and religious support base of Erdogan's ruling party amid an economic downturn.

In 2020, Erdogan joined hundreds of worshipers for the first Muslim prayers at Hagia Sophia in 86 years, brushing aside international criticism and calls for the monument to be preserved as a museum. Nearly 350,000 people took part in prayers outside the structure.
