UPDATE 3-Indonesia announces it will extend copper export permits for Freeport and Amman

JAKARTA, May 8 (Reuters) – Indonesia will extend copper concentrate export permits for Freeport Indonesia and Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara, President Joko Widodo told reporters on Wednesday, adding that details of the extensions were still being worked out. development course.
Freeport Indonesia and Amman are building copper smelters which are expected to begin operations in June. But the companies said the new smelters would need several months to increase capacity and absorb their copper concentrate production.
Current permits will expire on May 31.
“I guess the completion of the smelters shows their strong desire to start downstream mining in the country,” said Jokowi, as the president is nicknamed.
Speaking about the companies' plans while referring to his policy priority of increasing mineral processing in Indonesia, he added that their permits would be extended but the government was still calculating the details.
An Amman spokesperson said the extension of the permit would contribute to the continuation of the company's mining and expansion plans.
Freeport Indonesia is in ongoing discussions with the government, a company spokesperson said, without giving further details.
Freeport is preparing to ship up to 900,000 tonnes of copper concentrate, starting in June, from its Grasberg mine after positive negotiations with Indonesia to extend its export license, two sources said this week.
