Pakistan Supreme Court grants more seats to jailed former PM Imran Khan's party

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's Supreme Court ruled Friday that the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan was wrongly denied at least 20 seats in parliament, in a major blow to the country's fragile governing coalition.

The Supreme Court's decision was welcomed by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which was previously excluded from a system that gives parties extra seats reserved for women and minorities in the National Assembly, or the lower house of parliament.

While the verdict is a major political victory for Khan, it will not put his party in a position to topple the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who came to power after a February 8 election that Khan's allies consider rigged.

PTI Chairman Gohar Khan welcomed the court's decision, saying justice had been served. It was a day of joy, he said, urging his supporters to celebrate their victory in the long-running legal battle peacefully.

Azam Nazeer Tarar, the law minister in Sharif's cabinet, told reporters that the verdict does not threaten his coalition government, which has the necessary support from lawmakers in parliament.

The Pakistani constitution reserves 60 seats for women and 10 for minorities, distributing them to political parties in proportion to the number of seats won in elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan barred the PTI from contesting the elections as a party, saying it had failed to properly select its candidates through internal elections and had forced them to run as independents. The Supreme Court overturned the decision, saying a political party cannot be deprived of its reserved seats.

Sharif was elected prime minister by the National Assembly in March, with 201 votes out of 336. The PTI is expected to gain at least 20 more seats after the decision, adding to the 86 it currently holds.

Khan is currently in jail in the garrison city of Rawalpindi after being convicted in several cases.
