Former ISI chief Hameed was Pakistan's 'asset' but 'wasted', says Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Thursday said former spymaster Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed was an “asset” of Pakistan that had been “wasted”.

Hameed was arrested and court-martialled under military laws for allegedly abusing his authority while serving as director general of the Joint Intelligence Service (ISI).

Khan, in an informal conversation with reporters at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after the hearing of a case against him, also said the arrest was an internal matter of the army.

“It's their internal business, what should I do about it?” he said.

However, he could not hide his intuition for the late former senior official of the country when he said that he (Hameed) was our asset that was wasted.

Hameed, while heading the ISI from 2019 to 2021, was considered close to Khan who was prime minister at the time.

When Hameed was transferred by the army chief, Khan refused to approve the move, leading to a confrontation with the establishment that resulted in his ouster.

Khan recalled this when he claimed in a media conversation that former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa had removed Hameed at the behest of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif.

Khan also said that he had a bitter conversation with General Bajwa over Hameed's dismissal.

The former prime minister also said that there was information from the Intelligence Bureau that Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz was found sitting with Bajwa on several occasions.

He added that if Hameed is held accountable, then everyone should be held accountable.

According to the military, Hameed was arrested for court martial after an investigation into an allegation by a private real estate developer that he was involved in abuse of authority.
