Kabul was ready to take on terrorists under PTI govt, says Imran – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has asserted that his government is actively engaged with the Afghan Taliban in combating cross-border terrorism and Kabul is ready to cooperate.

Speaking to reporters after the £190m corruption referral hearing on Tuesday, Mr Khan rejected criticism of his party's government over the resettlement of suspected terrorists.

He said that after the fall of Kabul in August 2021, Pakistan asked the Afghan interim government to eliminate the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and it was ready to cooperate.

Pakistan has blamed the TTP, an outlawed terrorist group operating from Afghanistan, for terrorist attacks in the country in recent years.

The Foreign Ministry and the military have repeatedly urged the Afghan government to take action against the presence of terrorism in Afghanistan.

However, Pakistani officials believe that the Afghan Taliban government is unwilling to act against these terrorist groups.

During his interaction with reporters, Mr Khan also admitted that his government was in talks with the Kabul regime and former ISI chief retired Lt Gen Faiz Hameed briefed the opposition on the issue.

However, the former ISI chief was removed from his post at the behest of Nawaz Sharif, which had a negative impact on the dialogues.

According to Mr Khan, the Interior Minister said that the terrorists were operating from Afghanistan, meaning that the allegations against the PTI were baseless.

He questioned the recent wave of terrorism in Balochistan and asked whether the PTI was responsible for the unrest in the province and the law and order situation in Kacha area.

Mr Khan blamed the army for the unrest in Balochistan, bandit attacks in the Kacha region and even street crimes.

He said that when his party was in power, intelligence agencies were fighting terrorism, but now they were trying to shut down a political party.

Forced disappearances

Mr Khan also said that the government is doing nothing to stop enforced disappearances of citizens despite the directives of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The former prime minister warned that his successor, Shehbaz Sharif, could disappear if the establishment came up with a plan B.

He recalled that the IHC advised Prime Minister Shehbaz to end enforced disappearances, but no steps have been taken to address this serious problem.

Mr Khan also denied media reports that he had asked PTI party leaders to come out of hiding, saying they would be arrested once they reappeared.

He advised the party leaders to continue to remain in their respective hideouts.

Procedure

Earlier in the hearing, defense lawyers continued cross-examining the National Accountability Bureau investigator. The proceedings were adjourned until Friday (today).
