Patriotic education: Hong Kong schools begin teaching Xi Jinping thought | Hong Kong
The new school year began this week in Hong Kong with an important new addition to the curriculum for some students: the teachings of Xi Jinping Thought.
These changes come with new lessons about national security and pro-Beijing patriotism, as the influence and control of China's ruling Communist Party grows in the semi-autonomous city.
Teachings about the Chinese leader's ideology are being incorporated into a new subject now compulsory for secondary school students, Citizenship, Economics and Society, first announced for 2022.
The new module instills patriotic education in students in all grades of secondary school. Its content aims to cultivate students' sense of nation, affection for our country and a sense of national identity, in line with the curriculum guidelines issued by the government. Third-year students are required to learn Xi Jinping Thought in a module on our country's political structure and participation in international affairs. The guidelines recommend that teachers devote 12 40-minute lessons to this module.

“When I meet students on the street, I hear them chatting in Mandarin, they also use Chinese terms, and even their eating habits have been sinicized,” one said.

Changes to primary education were announced in late 2023. The education bureau said the general curriculum for primary school students would be replaced with a new curriculum by 2025.
