IHC summons Adiala prison director for contempt

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) today (Friday) summoned the superintendent of Adiala Jail for contempt of court for not allowing the founding president of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, to meet party leaders despite court orders.

IHC judge Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan heard the contempt petition. The judge addressed the prosecutor and commented: Why does this happen so often. We had written that despite our order, if the petition comes, the state will be fined.

Advocate Faisal Chaudhry appeared on behalf of the petitioner and said the court had ordered them to meet the PTI founder as per jail rules, but the party leaders' meeting with Imran in jail was canceled again . Shibli Faraz, Omar Ayub and Asad Qaiser were not allowed to meet the petitioner. We have to come back to court again and again.

He told the court that the applicant was no longer a convict but a prisoner under trial.

The court asked the state's attorney why this happened so often. The lawyer said we would ask the prison authorities whatever the situation. The prison director can better explain why an appointment was not made, he added.

The court ordered the state attorney to consider the petition and asked the prison director to appear in court at 10 a.m. today.
