Hong Kong Leader John Lee Welcomes Chinese President Xi Jinping to Peru Ahead of Apec Summit
Hong Kong's leader welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping upon his arrival in Peru, as the two prepare to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in the South American country's capital.
A video released by the Hong Kong government shows Lee shaking hands and exchanging words with Xi on the tarmac at Jorge Chavez International Airport shortly after the latter landed in Lima, accompanied by about 400 businessmen and entrepreneurs Thursday.
A focal point of Xi's visit on Thursday was the virtual inauguration of Peru's new $3.5 billion Chancay port, financed and operated by China. Beijing and Lima also plan to sign around 30 bilateral agreements during Xi's visit, including an updated free trade agreement.
Xi is expected to hold what could be his final meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday.
It will be Biden and Xi's first known interaction since a phone call in April and their first in-person meeting since their conference on the sidelines of last year's Apec meeting in California.
Meanwhile, Lee on Thursday called on an alpaca fiber company to explore business opportunities to promote cooperation between Peruvian and Hong Kong companies.
