Indonesians head to the polls for biggest regional elections

Indonesians will vote on Wednesday to elect their local leaders in the country's largest simultaneous regional elections, in which President Prabowo Subianto seeks to consolidate his party's gains.
More than 200 million people will vote to elect dozens of governors and mayors, as well as 415 regents, with some candidates linked to ex-leader Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, vying for coveted positions seen as pathways towards higher functions.
“This regional election is very important for the government of Prabowo Subianto because he needs to have his people at the regional level to ensure that his government functions effectively,” said Made Supriatma, political researcher and visiting scholar at the ISEAS-Institute. The race for Jakarta governor is attracting the most attention, with political parties viewing the position as a stepping stone to the presidency. Jokowi won the presidential election after serving as governor of the capital for two years.
Anies Baswedan, another former Jakarta governor, also managed to run in the 2024 presidential election, which he lost to Prabowo.
Jokowi's former cabinet secretary Pramono Anung, running alongside one of the country's most popular actors, Rano Karno, is seeking the seat of Jakarta governor.
Pramono is running against former West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, who is backed by the largest coalition of parties and backed by Jokowi.
“For Jokowi, these regional elections will determine his political influence in the future, if the candidates he supports lose in Central Java and Jakarta, his influence will decrease,” Made said.
Jokowi's son-in-law, Bobby Nasution, is running in the North Sumatra gubernatorial election.
Nasution, 33, currently mayor of the provincial capital, is the favorite to win, according to polls.
The only province in Indonesia that does not participate in local elections is Yogyakarta, as the country's cultural capital is ruled by a sultan who also serves as governor.
