China suspends top military official Miao amid corruption probes DW 11/28/2024

China announced Thursday that it had dismissed military official Miao Hua from his post over suspected “discipline violations.”

It comes as Beijing embarks on a major crackdown on corruption in its armed forces.

What do we know about Miao's suspension?

Authorities have “decided to suspend Miao Hua from his duties pending an investigation,” Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, said at a press briefing.

He said Miao had been accused of “serious disciplinary violations,” a phrase often used by Chinese officials to refer to corruption allegations.

The spokesperson did not provide further details on the investigations.

Miao was a senior member of the country's highest national defense authority, known as the Central Military Commission (CMC).

Soldiers subjected to multiple investigations and suspensions

At least nine generals from the Chinese army, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and a handful of defense industry executives have been dismissed from the CMC since last year as part of the campaign anti-corruption in Beijing.

The force that oversees China's strategic missile arsenal has come under particularly intense scrutiny, with its top official, Sun Jinming, expelled from the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over corruption allegations in July.

Chinese President Xi Jinping launched several anti-corruption campaigns shortly after taking office in 2013. Critics have accused him of using the investigations to consolidate his power within the CCP.

Investigation into the spokesperson of a “fabricated” minister

At Thursday's press conference, Wu also dismissed earlier reports that Defense Minister Dong Jun was under investigation for corruption.

“The reports in question are pure fabrications,” Wu said.

“The rumor mongers are ill-intentioned. China expresses its deep dissatisfaction with such defamatory behavior,” he said.

This declaration comes after that of the United Kingdom Financial Times The newspaper published an article quoting U.S. officials as saying Dong was the subject of a Chinese anti-corruption investigation.

Dong was named defense minister in December after his predecessor, Li Shangfu, was dismissed over allegations of alleged corruption after just seven months in office.

Former Defense Minister Wei Fenghe was also suspended for alleged corruption.
