Why Scotland needs conifers

The points raised by Stuart Brooks from the National Trust For Scotland (Letters, April 3) unfortunately paint a unilateral and rather polarized vision of forestry in Scotland.

The management of sustainable forests today focuses on the versatile service of public advantages, the conservation of nature, community needs and climate change.

Scotland must plant a range of types of wood and species of trees, recognizing that they all have the potential to provide economic, environmental and social advantages.

The latest figures show that Scotland does exactly this. In 2023/24, we had the highest level of wood creation in the past 34 years (15,000 hectares). More than half of this (7,700 hectares) was native woods, which is the highest level of creation of native woods for 21 years.

Contrary to what is suggested in the letter from Stuart Brooks, current subsidies actually modify the balance of Scottish forests by increasing the overall proportion of native woods and wide.

But it is essential that, as well as native trees, we continue to plant rapid growth conifers because, in addition offering other advantages, they sequest the carbon very quickly. Without them, we will not be able to reach our zero net commitments.

In the longer term, the wood produced which is used in construction also locks carbon for the life of the product. In addition, the entire sector generates more than 1.1 billion for our economy each year and supports more than 34,000 jobs.
