Pakistani Muslim teenager shoots and kills Ahmadi minority man

MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) – A 16-year-old Muslim boy opened fire on Friday and killed a member of Pakistan’s Ahmadi minority in the eastern province of Punjab, police and the community spokesperson said.

The shooting came as a group of Ahmadis were gathered for worship at a house in Sanghla Hill district, said local police chief Malik Shamshair. The attacker, Mohammad Mohab, was arrested, the police chief said.

The main killed, Tahir Ahmad, 31, was a homeopathic doctor. Three other Ahmadi men were injured in the shooting, including the father of the doctor whose condition was described as critical.

According to Shamshair, the teenager said he opened fire on Ahmadis because they insulted Islam.

Saleem Uddin, a spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan, condemned the attack and said members of their community were targeted because of their faith. Ahmadis have failed to secure adequate protection from Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government amid a wave of attacks in recent years, he said.

The Ahmadi faith was established on the Indian subcontinent in the 19th century by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, whose followers believe he was a prophet.
