Turkish research vessel docks in port after investigation in eastern Mediterranean

Update

ISTANBUL (AP) – The Turkish research vessel at the heart of an energy dispute between Turkey and Greece has returned to port.

In a tweet on Monday, Turkey’s Energy Ministry said Oruc Reis returned to the port of Antalya after completing two-dimensional seismic research in the Demre field. The MarineTraffic ship tracker showed that the study vessel had docked.

Tensions between the two neighbors and nominal NATO allies intensified over the summer with a military surge after Turkey sent the study vessel, escorted by Navy frigates, to the disputed waters of the eastern Mediterranean.

The move prompted Greece to send its warships as well, and both countries conducted military exercises to assert their claims. NATO intervened, organizing technical talks between the armies of the two countries to avoid a potential armed conflict.

Ankara claims the Greek and Greek Cypriot governments are infringing on the energy rights of Turkey and the separation of northern Cyprus by establishing maritime borders based on their own interests and attempting to exclude Turkey from potential oil reserves and gas.

Turkey says maritime borders for hydrocarbon resources should be calculated from the mainland, but Greece says the continental shelves of its islands dotting the Mediterranean should be included in its energy zone.

Competing demands led to a diplomatic crisis and aggressive rhetoric. Greece and Cyprus, members of the European Union, as well as France, called for sanctions against Turkey

The Oruc Reis was brought back to port in September for maintenance and restocking. Turkish officials said it was pulled from waters claimed by Greece to give diplomacy a chance. He was redeployed in October after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Athens of breaking his promises.

EU leaders are meeting for a summit on December 10 and 11 and are expected to discuss the dispute and possible sanctions.
