Blackhawks give Highland Park hockey great surprise
CHICAGO As soon as the Highland Park Giants got off the charter bus, they knew this was no ordinary team bonding experience.
Cheering members of the Chicago Blackhawks organization welcomed the high school students to the Fifth Third Arena Community Ice Rink, also known as the Blackhawks Practice Facility.
“We understand the tough times you’ve been through,” said Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson, who was part of the welcome party. “We just want to make sure you all know that we, the Blackhawks, were all with you.”
After each player donned their own custom Blackhawks jersey, two Chicago legends, Johnathan Toews and Patrick Kane, made their rounds to get to know the team.
“I mean, Patrick Kane complimented my hair twice, how much better does it get?” said PJ Donahue, a sophomore on the Highland Park hockey team.
“The Blackhawks won all the championships when they learned to fall in love with hockey,” said Michaela Donahue, PJ’s mother. “They played hockey because they love the Blackhawks and to meet them, to meet their heroes [and] to be here in this building is just an amazing experience for them.”
The day concluded with a scrimmage on the ice of the Blackhawks’ training facility, a breakout for children affected by the July 4 mass shooting in Highland Park.
“There are a lot of kids who are having a hard time. I think there are a lot of people in Highland Park who are having a hard time,” Kimmy Mindel said. “I think this will definitely help the guys, especially with some happy times to take their minds off everything.”
The Highland Park Giants kick off their high school hockey season on Thursday with a game against Bloomwhile the Blackhawks also have their first training camp of the year on Thursday.
