Soon 6 new courts will open at Saville Tennis Club
Six tennis courts come to Alberta’s capital year-round, with dignitaries turning a ceremonial sod on Tuesday morning.
The courts will be inside the Saville Tennis Club as part of Tennis Canada’s Year-Round Community Program.
The University of Alberta is one of four locations in Canada to receive funding in 2023 for a year-round facility as part of a partnership with Rogers Communications.
Over the next seven years, Tennis Canada plans to add 160 indoor courts to improve the accessibility of the game.
“Canada’s inventory of courts nationwide included about 7,500 courts and only about 750 of those, or 10 percent, were actually covered for year-round play,” explains Anita Comella of Tennis Canada.
“This new facility will allow us to expand our programming [and] give more players and coaches more opportunities to develop to their potential,” said Russ Sluchinski of the U of A.
The air-supported dome facility is already under construction and is expected to be completed in the fall.
